Some people walk into your life and it feels as if you have known them forever. Some situations keep returning in new clothes: a different boss, the same humiliation; a different partner, the same silence. In Akashic work, these are often signs of a soul contract.

A soul contract is an agreement your soul made before this lifetime, with another soul, with a lesson, or with a theme such as money, body or service. It is not a punishment and it is not fate carved in stone. It is a learning agreement. Once the learning is complete, the contract can be completed too.

This article explains what soul contracts are, the five types Neha Singla sees most often in her readings, and how to work with them through the Akashic Records.

Where soul contracts come from

The Akashic Records hold the memory of every soul’s journey. Before birth, the soul reviews what it wants to learn, heal and give in the coming life, and it makes agreements that will create those experiences. Some contracts carry forward unfinished business from earlier lives. Others are fresh choices: a soul that agrees to be your teacher, your mirror, or your child.

Reading a soul contract in the Records answers three questions:

  • What was agreed? The theme and the people involved.
  • Why was it agreed? What your soul wanted to learn.
  • Is it complete? And if not, what is left to learn or release.

The five soul contracts seen most often

1. The relationship contract

An agreement with a partner, parent, sibling or friend to teach each other something. These are the bonds that feel intense, magnetic or impossible to leave. The lesson is usually about self-worth, boundaries or unconditional love.

How it shows up: you keep returning to someone who hurts you, or you feel responsible for another person’s happiness.

2. The money contract

An agreement around abundance, lack, giving or receiving. Many money contracts are inherited through the family line, for example a vow of poverty from a religious life or a belief that wealth brings danger.

How it shows up: money comes in but never stays, or you feel guilty when you earn more than your parents did.

3. The ancestral contract

An agreement to heal something for your lineage. You might be the one in your family who breaks a cycle of silence, anger or scarcity. These contracts often feel heavy because they carry more than one lifetime’s story.

How it shows up: you notice the same struggle in your grandmother, your mother and yourself.

4. The body contract

An agreement held in the physical body: chronic tiredness, weight, or sensitivity that carries an emotional lesson. A body contract never replaces medical care; it adds the soul’s view of what the body is holding.

5. The purpose contract

An agreement to serve, teach, heal or create in a particular way. When a purpose contract is ignored, life tends to feel restless and empty, even when everything looks fine from the outside.

Signs a soul contract is active in your life

  • An instant, intense recognition when you meet someone.
  • A situation that repeats across years, places and people.
  • A fear that has no clear cause in this life.
  • A strong pull towards a place, culture, practice or deity.
  • A feeling of “I have done this before” when you begin certain work.

How to work with a soul contract

Step 1: Name it

Write down the situation that keeps returning. Be specific: who, what, and how it makes you feel.

Step 2: Ask the Records

Open your Akashic Records, sit with an Akashic oracle deck, or book a reading, and ask: “What is the soul contract behind this, and what is my soul learning from it?” (For help framing the question, read How to Ask the Akashic Records the Right Questions.)

Step 3: Receive the lesson

Most contracts loosen the moment the lesson is understood, not just intellectually but in the body. You might feel relief, tears or a sudden calm.

Step 4: Complete or release

When the lesson is learned, the contract can be completed with gratitude. In the Akashic Records this is done through intention, prayer or a guided release. Completing a contract does not always mean leaving a person; sometimes it means staying, but without the old charge.

Step 5: Choose a new agreement

Ask what you want to create next, and make that your conscious agreement with life.

Reading soul contracts with the Akashic Healing Oracle Deck

Neha channelled the Akashic Healing Oracle Deck (85 cards) for exactly this work. Each card names a contract or wound, shows how it lives in your daily life, and gives a healing action. A simple three-card spread works well:

  1. The contract: what was agreed.
  2. The mirror: how it shows up in your life today.
  3. The completion: what it takes to release it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a soul contract be broken?

A contract is usually completed rather than broken. When the lesson is truly learned, the contract loses its pull. Cutting a contract without learning the lesson often means the theme returns through someone new.

Are all soul contracts painful?

No. Many soul contracts are joyful: a best friend, a teacher who changes your life, a child who opens your heart. We simply notice the painful ones more.

Is a soul mate the same as a soul contract?

A soul mate connection is one kind of soul contract, an agreement between souls who have travelled together before. Not every soul mate is meant to be a life partner.

Do I need a reader, or can I find my own contracts?

You can begin on your own with journaling, meditation and an Akashic oracle deck. A trained reader can help when a contract feels too close to see clearly.
